Andy Burnett has owned and run Somerfields since 2005. He currently works out of Horotane Valley in Christchurch, which is unique for having its own micro climate. The main focus of Somerfields is on herbs, but he also grows perennials, vegetable plants, and a variety of other flowering plants and imports the stack-a-pots. His love of horticulture and enthusiasm for plants can be seen in his extensive knowledge of the uses and care of the plants he sells.
All his plants are chemical spray free, and all herbs are grown in a natural balance, encouraging beneficial predators and parasites. This is the foundation of organic growing, which involves maintaining a balance of life, not an absence of it. In addition, the plants are grown in a compost based mix with a slow release Osmocote and are fed a home made manure which includes nettles, comfrey and liquid fish and seaweed fertilizer.
His decision to import the stack-a-pots was made after seeing the product and being able to try them out. He was totally sold on the product and believes they are not only innovative, but very convenient and easy to use.
